This is a 1989 film that was written by Nora Ephron. It was directed by Rob Reiner. The movie stars two main characters Billy Crystal who plays the part of Harry Burns who is a very optimistic character and Meg Ryan plays Sally Albright, a reserved lady who is always keen to pursue her beliefs. Harrys optimistic nature is seen when he tries to convince Sally to get into a relationship with him despite their being in agreement that sex will always come in the way of a friendship between a man and a woman. Sally on the other hand is a character who likes to follow her beliefs and her reserved nature is clearly shown when Harry tries to get into a relationship with her and her main contention is to first throw the attempt as Harry hitting on her or flirting with her. Other characters in the movie are Marie. It is played by Carrie Fisher. She is Sallys friend who is consistently portrayed as desperate to find a husband. The fourth character is Jess, Harrys best friend. It is played by Bruno Kirby.
Harry and sally are both alumni of the university of Chicago. After their successful completion of their studies at this particular university, they both find it prudent to go to New York in pursuit of new lives. It is a coincidence that they find themselves in the same journey to New York. During the journey, they find so many interesting things to talk about and in the verge of the various discussions, they talk about relationships among men and women. They both observe that it is hard for a man and a woman to have a meaningful relationship without sex coming in between. In the long run, an argument ensues and they find themselves not having common interests at all. Whereas Harry finds his opinion on relationships to be open, Sally takes a reserved angle and tries to look at relationships like friendships as possible without sex. Their disagreement leads to them parting ways. This sees them to live separate lives in New York and they bump into each other from time to time. Their first meeting is not without tension as they go about trying to find out about their separate lives. During one of their meetings, Harry suggests that they go fro a date and this marks the beginning of a relationship that was unexpected after their drifting apart due to the argument that saw them go different ways. Harry is otherwise determined to bring about some form of friendship. Sally plays along and so they start a new friendship. This is met by a blow when Harry decides to one day flirt with Sally. She takes this in a wrong way and looks at Harrys attempt as hitting on her. She interpreted this as a direct sign that he wanted to sleep with her. They part ways a second time and do not manage to see each other for a long time after which they are both sucked into relationships with other people. These particular relationships do not particular seem to be what they had thought relationships would be. When they bump into each other after some while, they catch up on their lives and each talk about what they had been up to. Their current relationships take centre stage. Harry mentions his marriage which does not seem to be working while Sally mentions her relationship which is dull. This draws them closer in one way as they both feel the pressure of having to be in relationships that dont work. They then agree to meet some other time and chat over coffee.
Their next meeting coincidentally takes place when both of them are out of their relationships. Whereas Harry is divorced, Sally had not managed to keep her relationship with her partner and so had ended it. In this situation, their fate is sealed and their friendship takes a new turn as they are now both into a deeper friendship with each other. They now manage to meet frequently and in one of the meetings, they introduce each other to their friends. Harry introduces Sally to Jess, his best friend. Sally, on the other hand, introduces Harry to her best friend Marie. This whole move takes a different twist as the two, Marie and Jess hit it of instantly and become closer to the amazement of Harry and Sally. They even manage to become a closely knit couple. This makes Sally and Harry take a different look at their relationship. Their opinion towards each other changes and they are forced to review their relationship. A deeper and more open relationship ensues as both resign to the result of fate. They get into a relationship and take a step of faith by ignoring their former opinion on relationships between men and women (Weschler, 1999).
In conclusion, the movie is a romantic comedy that tends to look at the way people have relationships and their approach towards issues that concern sex between friends. The interaction between men and women is seen as not being able to be plain friendship without sexual attraction being a stumbling block to the friends. It is in contention whether two people of opposite sex can have a relationship without shifting the focus to sex. The movie manages to outline challenges that are in relationships where purpose is not very defined. Mutual attraction would spell doom if its main aim is focused on intimacy that does not necessarily bloom into a good and straight-forward relationship. The other dimension that the movie brings out is that most relationships are based on mutual understanding of each others feelings. This is clearly demonstrated when Sally and Harry are drawn to each other after they both become vulnerable and expose their inner feelings to each other. This seems to be a perfect recipe for their better understanding of each others feeling. Their understanding that relationships take their course if allowed to is also demonstrated when their love for each other is not broken even with their attempt to hook each other with their friends.
Therefore, what started out as a friendship between two strangers who met on a trip to New York to find new life ended up in a relationship that took time to nurture.
